The slight chance of ocean turned into a trip to Mustang Island, Corpus Christi. My mom, Sheryl, (my mom's friend), Rebekah, (her daughter, my age), Hannah, (her younger daughter), and myself decided to go, for four days, to the sea. And it was great.
Getting there took a whole day, but even THAT was an adventure. While driving down the highway going through a sunny town called Themiddleofnowhere, our tire popped and we had to wobble to the side of the rode. The heat was burning our scalps as we sat on the side of the highway waiting for some knight on a white horse to come rescue us. Soon after, a man and his son, swirved over to come to our aid. They got out, looked at our flat, and without many words hopped back in their car and drove off. That was disappointing. Finally, a sheriff drove up, did some communicating on his walkie-talkie, and within minutes, I, Rosie Ninesling, got to drive in the front seat of an immense tow truck, through a field off of the highway and into an old tire shop filled with old country men chuckling and calling Bekah and I "cuties". Also, we got free cokes which I was pretty happy about. For some reason fixing the car took a good deal of time, but even that wasn't a problem because during that time we were blessed by having those same old tire-shop guys tell us jokes that didn't make sense. Their texan accents made us laugh more.
Later, when it was good and dark, we arrived at the beach.
No, we didn't get a hotel. We actually "roughed it", with some good old tent-camping. I actually really enjoy roughing it, so this aspect of the trip was no-problemo. Setting up the tent took a good hour or two, and sleep was beautiful that night. I got up with sunrise, and enjoyed walking the quiet morning beach that I only had to share with the fishermen.
The second day was beach day, where I got a massive sun-burn, boogie boarded my heart out, and freaked myself out everytime a piece of seaweed brushed my leg. The water was clear, (a big surprise for being a texas beach!) and the sand was splendid, and I even was lucky enough to have some little kids on the beach bury me with sand and turn me into a mermaid with a DD cup size.
The third day we went to downtown Corpus, visited Texas A&M Corpus Christi (where I want to go to college) and went to the Texas State Aquarium. There, there was a dolphin show and I got chosen to be a volunteer from the audience! Me! (Okay, so maybe I was chosen because I nearly killed myself jumping out of my seat when they asked for a volunteer, but whatevs. I was still chosen!) I held a triangle up, and the little dolphino swam up to me and bumped the triangle with it's nose. It was thrilling. ;)
The last day we visited Padre Island National Seashore, and I loved it and I swear someday I'll be a park ranger there. Bliss.
The ride home we slept. And talked. And ate fast-food. And cried about our sunburns, and cried because we already missed the beach.
Mark my words, one day I will live on the coast where I belong, and will drink the hot sun, fill my lungs with the humid air, and make my own paradise.
But for right now, I'm riding on another wave of life.
