While poem-hopping around today I found this poem by an old Australian poet by the name of David Lewis Pagent. I didn't find the poem to be all that fabulous, but his lines reminded me of the old Hendrix song, "Castles Made of Sand". Now, I'm not too familiar with Jimi Hendrix. I've seen old videos or PBS specials, or something of that nature on him. But I'm not some super fan with posters, cds, etc. I know like, two songs. However, I'm fond of his lyrics "castles made of sand". And so, with this familiarity, I found his song and David's poem to be extremely-closely related. So either one of them copied or they both had the same idea!
Here's some excerpts from the poem:
"While we watched as the sands of time
Wrought havoc in our lives,
The moat we built could not protect
From husbands, or from wives."
Hmmm... sounds a lot like....
"Down the street you can hear her scream "you're a disgrace"
As she slams the door in his drunken face,
And now he stands outside and all the neighbors start to gossip and drool.
He cries "Oh girl, you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?"
Then the poem, again...
"The tide swept in and filled the moat,
The sides began to melt"
And Jimi Hendrix's song:
"And so castles made of sand, melt into the sea eventually."
HMMM. I just though I'd point that out. I guess I get overly excited when I figure and relate stuff like this.
This whole sand-castle talk also really reminded me of when I was a kid- well, I still am. But when I was young(er). I worried about everything and what really helped was imagining myself on the beach. With every worry I had, I picked another handful of sand and formed a sandcastle. Since nothing stands when it's built on sand, when the it was done, I let the waves take it away. The waves were like God.
I really don't this was quite the message in the song or the poem. But they seemed to remind me of this, sort of like a well-worn baseball glove reminds the player of the games he used to play. Except, I think I'm still playing my game, my let-go game.
